Our Story – Shack in the Back BBQ

Shack in the Back BBQ began as a long-held dream of the Sivells family, one that finally became a reality in April 2006. What started as a weekend hobby quickly grew into a full-time, seven-day-a-week business offering award-winning BBQ and full-service catering for weddings, corporate events, and special occasions of all kinds.

Our original location was a cozy 920-square-foot log cabin built in 1896, located just across the roundabout. With only six tables in the lobby, it was small but full of heart. Over time, our reputation spread far and wide customers came from across the region, and the Locals say we helped put Fairdale, KY on the map!

In 2018, we were honored to be featured on the Food Network’s Man, Fire, Food and in a national commercial for Gordon Food Service, which continues to air today.

As business grew, it became clear we were outgrowing our original space. When our landlord sold the property to a neighboring gas station, we knew we had to stay rooted in Fairdale. With the support of local officials and METCO, we purchased the old Forcht Bank building—an ideal spot near the new Greenspace and the gateway to Jefferson Memorial Forest, the largest urban forest in the country.

On May 14, 2022, we proudly opened the doors to our new 4,400-square-foot Shack in the Back BBQ. Today, guests can enjoy delicious BBQ on our outdoor patio while listening to live music from our patio or on occasion the gazebo next door. Every plate we serve is a continuation of our journey, a story built on community, perseverance, and a love for great food. We’re grateful for your continued support and for being part of our Shack in the Back family!
